It was an informative evening at Nikos Cafe. As it turned out his father, Filippas Filippakis, was an a photographer and his son Nikos is a historian at heart. He preserved the images of his father documenting life in Olymbos and in the US Diaspora. The images now decorate his Cafe. As it turns out multiple photographers, among them Josef Kudelka have visited and documented the village’s past. Liliane de Toledo published Niko’s fathers life in Greece and the US, Hans Silvester also Swiss based presumably stayed for a year and published an extensive volume titled “Le pain des femmes” about his time on Karpathos. Multiple documentaries for different national European channels have done the same. The reason is probably the remote and pituresque location of Olymbos and the fact that locals preserved tradition more so than on other Greek islands. So I had a long evening learning about the life of the locals here and in the diaspora. The following day I took it easy and just wandered the village. The images below are intended to give a sense of the place.

The following day was a grey and overcast day. Still a few more images of the villlage.
