Once again, I managed to lose my way—and in doing so, stumbled upon a hidden valley in the neighborhood. It came at a cost: a three-hour descent over wet rocks and slippery ground left my thighs sore and aching. Still, the photos below prove it was all worth it. My youngest son, however, was less impressed. He gets nervous when our hikes turn unexpectedly adventurous.

Before descending I came across this bizarre flower basket. Can wood really grow like this?

Stables destroyed by avalanches served as reminders that the steep slope above can cause one or the other surprise. The sign had a comical aspect to it, because the paths were so overgrown that it was impossible to stay on the trail.

Reaching this gorge it became clear that we are on the right track. All we had to do was follow the water.

Finally first signs of civilization.

As a final reward an evening picture.

All is well that ends well.
